With the series clearly in Detroit's favor, the Chicago Blackhawks came home and took one back. After controlling the game early, the Hawks had an awful 2nd period where they saw three goals scored by the Red Wings.
Fortunately, in the 1st OT, Patrick Sharp got it done.
Though I'm happy we're just a game behind now, I've got to admit, we should have took care of Detroit in regulation. Giving up three goals in a single period during the playoffs is simply unforgivable.
At any rate, I'll take the "W" and look for an even series by the time I go to sleep tomorrow.
Go Hawks!

Unfortunately, we're down two games, but it's too early to hang our heads. Our Blackhawks are headed back home and I am absolutely sure that our fans will put forth an effort that will rival "Hockeytown".
Just look at our fans...we've stuck with our boys in red through the lean times and now that we're so close to the ultimate goal, it would be a shame to drop our chins now.
So come this Friday, let's give our team some jump...let's blow the roof off with our cheers...let's help our players work their way back into this series. Yes...Detroit fans...you've taken the first two, but come Game 3, in the words of Billy Joe, you'll be playing in "Khabitown".

I traveled with three friends to Detroit for Game 1. Detroit has an obsession with calling itself "Hockeytown." They are wrong. They have admittedly done well through their history but it has caused them to grow complacent. My friends and I were unimpressed by the enthusiasm of the Red Wings fans. They don't get excited like Hawks fans do at home games. They also failed to prevents Hawks fans from buying up a substantial number of seats at Game 1.
Because of this complacency, I feel we should strip them of their self-entitled nickname as "Hockeytown." I want Hawk fans to cheer "Khabitown" every time the great Khabibulin makes a save in Detroit. My friends and I shouted it and it caught on in our section. It really pissed off a lot of Red Wings fans that sat near us.

Well, the Blackhawks have made it to the Western Conference Finals and I'm extremely excited. It has been so long since we've had a shot like this, but thanks to hard work, great draft picks, excellent team chemistry, and a whole lot of patience, we're now back as a full-fledged cup contender.
But before we start talking about the cup, we've got to get past the Red Wings. I don't know about you, but I had a feeling all along that if we were going to challenge for the cup, we'd have to go through Detroit to do it.
Here at ChicagoBlackhawksBlog.com, we've received a number of emails from Detroit fans claiming that they're going to steamroll us on their way to winning another cup. Granted, I've cleaned up the language a bit, but that's basically what Red Wings fans are saying. If you ask me, that's just a lot of hot air.
Yes, I'll admit that we lost the season series 2 - 4 and the Winter Classic was a tough one to swallow. However, if you look at the last two games between these squads, Chicago has ended up on top both times.
I don't know about you, but I'm tired of seeing Detroit lift the cup...it's our time! Let's take all the momentum we have and beat those Red Wings. To be honest, I can't think of a better Original Six matchup. I'm sure there are a lot of fans in Toronto, Boston, Montreal, and New York that would disagree with me, but given this year's playoffs, they cannot deny that this matchup was meant to be.

If you were looking for my post early this morning about last night's awesome victory against the Calgary Flames, I apologize...I was up too late celebrating!
We just took knocked out a very tough team and to be honest, I almost feel like we'll have an easier time in the second round against the Vancouver Canucks. Granted, we split the season series against them; however, with the way our guys are playing, I have all the confidence in the world right now.
As I've said all series long, everyone is contributing. I don't care which line is out there...roll 'em all game long it doesn't matter...it feels like everyone is putting the puck in the net right now.
Some people may worry that we've had a rough series while Vancouver has been resting for some time now, but I don't buy that. We have momentum and they may be a bit rusty. So, let's take advantage of that and try to steal game one!

Boy...home ice advantage continues to be the difference in this series. Let's hope that Chicago changes things up in Calgary, but until then, I'm just going to enjoy this relatively relaxed victory.
With the Chicago fans behind them, the Blackhawks scored pretty early...under 10 minutes into the game. I'm not sure what it was, but Kiprusoff just couldn't keep anything out of the net tonight. Definitely one of his worst playoff performances I'm sure.
However, let's not take anything away from our guys in red. Everytime the puck came off of their sticks, the rubber seemed to find the back of the net. I'm sure glad the game went the way it did because after letting in six the last time these two teams played, I was a bit worried.
Fortunately, our guys bounced back stronger than ever and really put a beating on Calgary. Hopefully, the Flames are a little discouraged so that we can just finish them off in six and rest up for the 2nd round. Though I'm looking ahead, I know that there's still a lot of work to be done, so keep up the good work gentleman.

On Saturday night, the Chicago Blackhawks scored early and often throughout the 60 minutes in Game 5 against the Calgary Flames. In fact, after putting 4 pucks past Miikka Kiprusoff on only 18 shots, the netminder was pulled in favor of the backup goalie.
As for the Hawks, everything seemed to be clicking. Our guys were skating hard, making passes, and converting on what felt like every other scoring chance.
As for Khabibulin, he had a relatively quiet night having only to face 20 shots. This isn't surprising given that we spent a lot of time around the net on the other end of the ice.
Now the series is tipped back in our favor and we have a chance to close out the first round in Western Canada.
Good job guys and go Blackhawks!

All tied up...now it's time to jump ahead. With the Blackhawks back at home, I hope the trend continues where home ice determines the winner. If we're lucky and our young guns take it tonight, we'll have two chances to shut this thing down making this game absolutely huge.
I'm not an NHL head coach, nor have I ever been one. However, I've watched a lot of hockey in my life and I think that is pretty much the same thing. With that said, here are my keys to victory.
- Get off to a good start: In order to take advantage of home ice, the Blackhawks need to come out skating hard and put one in the basket early. This definitely will get the crowd roaring...giving the entire team that extra jump for the rest of the game.
- Shut down their stars: This one is a no-brainer. If their stars don't score, we'll probably win. Specifically, I'm talking about Iginla Jokinen. They're the type of players you don't stop, but hope to contain. If we can keep these guys down to a single goal between the two of them, then I like our chances.
- Keep the Flames from scoring 6 goals: Granted, one of those was an empty-netter, but come on...six goals in a playoff game?! That's just crazy. It's a pretty bad night when your team puts four in the net and lose by two. I'm not asking Khabibulin to steal a game (though that would be nice). I'm just asking him to keep it close...especially early.

Apparently, home ice is important in this series. First, Chicago took two from Calgary...then the Flames returned the favor. I was hoping that our boys would be coming home with an opportunity to end it. Instead, we're looking at a three game playoff series.
Thanks to Patrick Kane, the Blackhawks got on the board within the first five minutes of the game. Unfortunately, the good start didn't last very long. In fact, roughly a minute later, Jerome Iginla scored his 2nd goal of the playoffs and tied the game.
Calgary didn't stop there. They scored three more unanswered goals making Khabibulin look like swiss cheese. That 2nd period was brutal. On five shots, Nikolai let in three goals...wow.
However, our boys didn't give up. Instead, they scored three unanswered goals themselves and tied the game. At this point, I really thought we were going to take this one. That was until 13:04 of the 3rd period, when Nystrom punched all 'Hawks fans in the stomach.
Good News: We're unbeaten at home and two of the three games will be played in our rink.
Bad News: We're on a two game losing streak.
Let's get it together Chicago...six goals in the playoffs is simply unacceptable.

Well, I guess we all knew that it wasn't going to be that easy.
With their home crowd behind them, the Calgary Flames found a way to get four pucks past Nikolai Khabibulin. Even though our Chicago Blackhawks outshot the Flames 38 to 28, the scoreboard showed that after 60 minutes, this series was no longer one-sided.
What's frustrating is that we started out so well. With the one goal lead, it looked like our Hawks were going to add to that total on a number of rushes. Unfortunately, Kiprusoff was on his game tonight and made some big-time acrobatic saves to keep the game close...which is what Calgary needed.
Soon after the initial Chicago goal, the Flames rattled off four consecutive tallies which was too much to overcome.
